What are some good hair styling products/tips?

My hair is chin-length, brown, and very thick. Whenever I try to use a styling product, such as gel, it never works right. If I use a curler and curl my hair, the curls end up limping out in a few short hours. If I straighten my hair, it goes back to it's wild and wavy style by the end of the day.

I want my hair to be able to be 'played with'. I want to try different gels and styles and actually have them work. Does anyone have tips on good products for my kind of hair, or tips on how I can style it better?
