Make your own temp. hair die?

my friend makes it from gel and eye shawdow, but that doesn't work on my hair.

does anyone know a easy to make temp. hair die so i can die my hair purple or something for the day without having to buy anything?

my friend has also used food coloring, would that be ok for my hair?
